Far Away

Take a picture of your octopus as far as possible from its registered address

Octomus poses next to the iconic Ayers Rock (Uluru). Its natural beauty and stark contrasts are approximately 10,726 ft miles from home (Somerville, MA).

Octomus has never seen any rock so beautiful.

(Supporting photos: gmap pedometer calculation and photo in the Ayers Rock Resort.)

Famous Friend

Take a picture of your octopus with a famous person. The more famous, the better.

Here, Ultros and Octomus pose with their famous friend, Mozilla Firefox[1], whose popularity includes 140 million users as of February 2008[2].

If a tiebreaker is needed, Ultros should get the edge because Octomus is famous for his imposing stature[3] (so Ultros is posing with two famous friends), and Ultros is a nobody (so Octomus is only posing with one famous friend).

Friends

Fit as many registered octopodes as possible into the same picture. (The more the better.)

We present a photo of the first meeting of Ultros and Octomus, where they broke bread with Ethiopian food on a regal carpet of glittering shiny purple gems. What was said at this historic meeting of two great powers of the sea? Perhaps we'll find out, in time....

Pedigree

Document your octopus' suitability to be king.

Octomus is uniquely suited to be King. First of all, his imposing stature commands respect from other octopodes [1]. Secondly, his regal bearing (as seen in the attached photo) is a clear indication of his suitability. But wait - what's this we see on his tentacle? He bears the royal birthmark - a purple crown! Of his pedigree, there can be no doubt any longer.

Aquatic

Demonstrate that your octopus is at home in an aquatic environment.

While in Australia, Octomus visited Wally, a humpheaded Maori wrasse. Wally lives in the Great Barrier Reef, at Norman Reef. Octomus also brought its human, who had never met Wally before.

Supporting photos: Octomus's human is not as good at taking pictures as the professionals, but some of her underwater pictures came out okay. If she had bought a more expensive camera the pictures would look more colorful. In octomus-underwater.jpg, Octomus is swimming over to play with some of the other fishes. (Octomus discovered that while underwater it was best to keep humans on a leash, lest they drift off in the current or accidentally run into things. Other octopodes who plan to keep their human pets long-term should keep this in mind.)

In octomus-underwater-2.jpg, we see the the entrance to the reef hotel where Octomus stayed.

Cooperation

Multiple octopodes cooperate together to accomplish something no single octopus could do alone!

What can 2 octopodes do that a single octopus cannot accomplish by itself?

Ultros and Octomus welcome a new addition to their loving family, Cephiroth!

Octomus goes to visit a hair salon for a little primping. On the way back home with Ultros, he sees a fascinating truck! Even though this is not worth as much as Pizzazze in scrabble, he is so amused he has the driver perform daredevil stunts to take a photograph. Go team Octomus!

Maze

Because of their intelligence and flexibility, octopodes are very good at solving mazes.

Octopodes are good at mazes, but how do you think they got that way? Each baby octopus is taught the skills of maze solving by their loving parents. Here, Octomus and Ultros build a maze and teach baby Cephy to navigate it.

In maze-overview.JPG, we see the overview of the maze Ultros and Octomus built.
In cephystarts.JPG, we see Cephy entering the maze under the encouragement of Ultros.
Cephy gets stuck in a dead end! cephydeadend.JPG But with some guidance from Cephy's parents, Cephy successfully finishes the maze in cephyfinishes.JPG

The whole family poses for a family photo at the end (familyphoto.JPG).

Vertebrate

Octopodes are honorary vertebrates in the UK! Send in a picture of your octopus making friends with the largest living vertebrate it can find.

In the Sydney Zoo, there are giraffes. Now, I know giraffes aren't Australian, but there aren't that many large Australian animals. Apparently there used to be some giant wombats, but not anymore.

Anyway, so, Octomus made friends with a couple of fellow travelers - a pair of friendly (but hungry) giraffes visiting from Africa. You can see the Sydney skyline in the background. Giraffes are rather large vertebrates, and in fact, are the tallest vertebrates. (We were on a platform.) They can also weigh up to 3,800 lbs, though I didn't ask these how much they weighed or how heavy they were. They were eating, though, which means they were getting heavier the longer we watched them!

Egalitarian Thingy

Send in a photo of your octopus with the best thing. Bonus points for famous things.

The Sydney opera house is a wonder of architectural innovation and achievement. It pioneered a new method of building and remains one of the most distinctive buildings in the world. It was ranked in the top 20 finalists for the Seven Wonders of the World competition in 2007, thus proving that it is at the very least better than all but 19 other things. Plus, it draws its inspiration from the design of a series of interlaced seashells, with a roof that gleams and shines like the inside of a particularly beautiful oyster shell (see supporting photo). This homage to the sea tugs at the heart of all creatures that make the sea their home.

Not to mention, it is especially beautiful in the early morning sun, as seen across the harbor.
